About
This interactive data visualization accompanies the Nature Expert Recommendation on “Embracing data-driven decision making to manage and communicate the impact of big science projects.” The visualization shows the collaboration network among institutions across the map. Data were extracted from the INSPIRE HEP dataset and processed to generate the networks for the 4 considered physics and astronomy projects: BaBar, ATLAS, LIGO, and IceCube. Openstreetmaps data was used to resolve geolocations. In the visualization, each edge corresponds to the existence of collaborations between two institutions. The edge opacity and width are proportional to the strength of the collaboration across all the considered years. Nodes colors represent the institution types and edge colors indicate the first year of collaboration according to the legends. For performance reasons, only the top 1000 most significant connections are displayed for the current view of the map.
